Amazin’ Mets Foundation Launches Mets Nike RBI Program

Program Builds on Foundation’s Efforts to Expand Access to Youth Baseball
FLUSHING, N.Y., May 27, 2025– The Amazin’ Mets Foundation today announced the launch of the New York Mets participation in Major League Baseball’s Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) program, an outreach initiative designed to increase involvement and interest in baseball and softball for underrepresented communities. The Foundation is furthering its commitment to developing youth baseball athletes by sponsoring the Mets’ first Nike RBI Team.
“Supporting youth baseball goes beyond the game,” said Alex Cohen, Mets Owner and President of the Amazin’ Mets Foundation. “It’s about opportunity, mentorship, and building confidence. We’re excited to expand access to baseball for local kids and create a pathway for the next generation of athletes.”
Mets first baseman Pete Alonso will serve as the team’s Nike RBI ambassador. The Mets Nike RBI team will consist of 18 local, talented baseball players, ages 11 and 12. These athletes will wear special Mets uniforms as they compete in tournaments throughout the tri-state area. Leading the team in its inaugural season will be head coach Eric Mercado, who brings over 20 years of experience coaching baseball players who advance to collegiate baseball. He will be joined by assistant coaches Jonathan Pineiro and Sal Taormina.
The Mets Nike RBI team is an integral part of the Junior Mets Youth Baseball & Softball program. The Junior Mets program provides access to the sport of baseball through free educational clinics, baseball curriculum lessons, and equipment and ticket donations for local youth athletes. The Amazin’ Mets Foundation works closely with Tri-State area youth leagues and schools to provide access to the game of baseball for children of all backgrounds, year-round.
