Mets Community Programs

The Amazin’ Mets Foundation and GrowNYC team up with Empire BlueCross BlueShield for Eat Smart with the Mets, a nutrition program that encourages healthy eating and provides nutritional knowledge for young students. GrowNYC’s Seed to Plate Program is a nutrition education program that tells the story of local food and why it is important for our bodies, the environment, and our community, inspiring healthy food choices and environmental leaders.

The Seed to Plate program offers ten lesson plans for participating schools that include field trips to local greenmarkets, exploring local farms, cooking lessons, and focus on the importance of a balanced diet.

• Lesson 1 – Welcome to Seed to Plate
• Lesson 2 – Field Trip: Welcome to the Greenmarket!
• Lesson 3 – Local & Seasonal Foods: Exploring Farms of the Northeast
• Lesson 4 – Eat a Rainbow!
• Lesson 5 – Sustainable vs. Industrial Farming
• Lesson 6 – Meet Your Farmer Classroom Visit
• Lesson 7 – What’s the Story of Food?
• Lesson 8 – Field Trip: A Day on the Farm
• Lesson 9 – Now we’re Cooking! Farm Fresh Cooking
• Lesson 10 – Students Taking Action: Think Globally Eat Locally

During the Spring of 2023, Eat Smart with the Mets worked with eight schools and 1,000 students

Mets on the Move, presented by the Hospital for Special Surgery, is a fitness program dedicated to keeping kids active and healthy. In 2024, the Mets will work with 3,000 students at six local elementary schools. The program launches on May 6 and runs throughout the month to coincide with National Physical Fitness and Sports month.

Participating students received pedometer watches to track their physical fitness. The more steps they accumulate, the more Mets prizes they can earn.

The Amazin’ Mets Foundation has funded grants to numerous local organizations that offer programs which inspire our youth to stay active and healthy all year round, including New York Edge (to support their Girls L.E.A.D program as well as funding for new gym equipment and athletic gear for after school sports) and Flushing YMCA (to support children in their summer camp program).

Mindfulness with the Mets

In 2022, the Mets launched “Mindfulness with the Mets,” a new program focused on enhancing the health and wellness of young members of the community. This program focuses on encouraging young students to learn about the importance of mental health and find ways to bring positive thinking and solutions to help ease anxiety and combat depression. The Mets partner with Child Center of NY, a leading and prominent community mental health center in New York City, to work with youth in their outpatient program on yoga, meditation horticultural therapy, nutrition and workshops with Mets players and staff to learn ways the professional athletes stay clam in high stress situations.

The Amazin’ Mets Foundation funded a grant to the Child Center of NY for their new center in Woodside, Queens that offers therapy by licensed mental health and substance abuse professionals to children and adolescents — including those in foster care.
